The next ten years hold great promise for energy investment and development in North America. The significant oil and natural gas reserves recently discovered in our domestic conventional and unconventional plays (Barnett, Marcellus, Eagle Ford, etc.) could reveal 50-100 year domestic supply opportunities. Separately, the new technological advances such as hydraulic fracturing applied to conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon exploration are now available for application to geological formations in hydrothermal dolomite layers, reefs, and other previously inaccessible formations for extraction of oil, natural gas and liquids rich condensates. With these new techniques comes the challenge of responsible and sensible development. Energy exploration is exciting, but it also presents significant risks.
